These simple things will help you extend its life and also avoid those expensive repair cost.

Inspecting and Maintaining Your Gas Hot Water System

Contrary to what you may think, a hot water system is not that complex. It mainly consists of a water storage tank and a heating element. In a gas hot water system, there is a gas burner which is turned on periodically through a thermostat. One of its key components is a pilot burner which has to be on at all times. To repair jobs these vital parts, you may need a licensed and professional plumbers. But as a common homeowner having such system, you can do a regular inspection to help you ensure that it is always working as it should:

First, inspect the temperature setting. A hot water system has an ideal temperature range of 46-49 degrees Celsius. Most often, the temp is set much higher than that which is a waste of energy and contributes to its repair problems.

It is also important that you should visually inspect the burner. Temporarily increase the heat setting in order to force the burner to ignite. Then, look for soot and observe the color of the flame. If you notice that the flame is predominantly yellow or orange and/or there is a significant build up of soot, it is time to call a licensed plumber as these might be signs of trouble.

One of the extremely important parts of your gas hot water system is the temperature/pressure relief valve (TPRV). You should partially lift the lever and let it go at least once a year. Ideally, it should snap back down and there’s a gurgling sound of water draining back into the drain tube that you’ll hear.

As time passes by, there might be sediments that will collect at the bottom of the tank, leading to rust and corrosion. You can do a mini-flush at least once a year in order to minimize the buildup of sediment.

With those simple procedures mentioned above, you are able to maintain your gas hot water system without entailing any cost and as a result, will prolong the life span of your gas hot water system. Online plumbing supplies Australia
